{"id":11983,"date":"2014-05-20T06:57:23","date_gmt":"2014-05-20T13:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/?p=11983"},"modified":"2014-05-20T06:57:23","modified_gmt":"2014-05-20T13:57:23","slug":"its-all-been-seen-before-in-a-manner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/?p=11983","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s all been seen before, in a manner."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s all been seen before as the saying goes.\u00a0 I want to back up for a minute though.\u00a0 In 2013 I was driving south on the Trans Canada Hwy through the Thompson Canyon.\u00a0 I am always looking for things to photograph but in this case my desire to pull over was additionally fueled only in the way that too much coffee and hours of driving can.\u00a0 At a certain point I saw a foot bridge over the river\u00a0that I had never\u00a0noticed before and doubled back to see if I could have a closer look.\u00a0 I made my way down to the footings of the bridge which was completed locked against any entry but I knew I had to photograph it.\u00a0 I took a few pictures and was quite pleased but what I really wanted was a train with tanker cars across the river.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t need to wait long.\u00a0 I took a few shots to get things set up and waited for the right moment when the tankers were in the frame.\u00a0 I included the river in the composition as I was trying to show in one image the precarious situation of oil filled rail cars on the edge of one of the most important rivers in British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  alignnone size-full wp-image-11985\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PentaxZ1p_KodakPortra400_Aug2013_025.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11985\" alt=\"PentaxZ1p_KodakPortra400_Aug2013_025\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PentaxZ1p_KodakPortra400_Aug2013_025.jpg\" width=\"415\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PentaxZ1p_KodakPortra400_Aug2013_025.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PentaxZ1p_KodakPortra400_Aug2013_025-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PentaxZ1p_KodakPortra400_Aug2013_025-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Thompson River with tanker cars, 2013 (Wallace Koopmans)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to May 2014 when I went to the Vancouver Art Gallery.\u00a0 I reached the second floor with the Edward Burtynsky exhibit and\u00a0I was only three images in when I was confronted with the large-scale print<em><strong>\u00a0(Railcuts #11 CN Track Thompson River, British Columbia 1985)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  alignnone size-full wp-image-11986\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EBurtynskyRailcuts11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11986\" alt=\"EBurtynskyRailcuts11\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EBurtynskyRailcuts11.jpg\" width=\"415\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EBurtynskyRailcuts11.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EBurtynskyRailcuts11-150x119.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EBurtynskyRailcuts11-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately that this was the same location that I had been at the previous summer.\u00a0 Now I was aware of Burtynsky&#8217;s\u00a0series &#8216;Railcuts&#8217; and had seen several examples but I don&#8217;t believe I had ever seen this image.
