{"id":6966,"date":"2012-12-03T07:24:45","date_gmt":"2012-12-03T15:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/?p=6966"},"modified":"2012-12-03T07:24:45","modified_gmt":"2012-12-03T15:24:45","slug":"the-problem-with-digital-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/?p=6966","title":{"rendered":"The problem with digital photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What makes digital photography so great also is the source of a problem.\u00a0 When the barriers to taking pictures are so low \u00a0you can create a difficult situation sorting through them to find the ones to keep.\u00a0 Keeping them all is no answer either it just delays the selection to some later time.\u00a0 With film there are fixed limits to how many frames of film you might have and how much you might want for later, digital blows through that barrier allowing thousands of pictures on a memory card.\u00a0 There is an easily\u00a0determined cost to film that goes something like (Film $6 + Developing $3.00 = $9.00 \/36) = about 25 cents per shot.\u00a0\u00a0 Once you have a digital camera the per shot cost is virtually nil.<\/p>\n<p>So it becomes very tempting to just keep shooting and taking a multitude of pictures with digital but it&#8217;s when you have to pick out the worthy ones while being careful to not delete something that might have a distinct value later that you might wish you had used more restraint.\u00a0 The upside of course is that you increase your chances of capturing an interesting moment but that can be done with film too it just requires more active participation on the part of the photographer.\u00a0 Instead of snapping you should be looking and thinking.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  alignnone size-full wp-image-6968\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/multiple_contact_Sheet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6968\" title=\"multiple_contact_Sheet\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/multiple_contact_Sheet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/multiple_contact_Sheet.jpg 792w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/multiple_contact_Sheet-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course I am guilty of this myself\u00a0 this digital &#8220;contact sheet&#8221; may illustrate my point.
