{"id":4367,"date":"2011-10-07T07:26:49","date_gmt":"2011-10-07T14:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/?p=4367"},"modified":"2011-10-07T07:24:42","modified_gmt":"2011-10-07T14:24:42","slug":"creating-a-custom-macro-mode-for-the-nikon-p7000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/?p=4367","title":{"rendered":"Creating a custom macro mode for the Nikon P7000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-4393\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0524.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4393\" title=\"_K7_0524\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0524.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0524.jpg 640w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0524-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is a way to set a custom macro mode for the Nikon P7000 and save it to one of the user presets.\u00a0 But Wallace you say &#8220;There&#8217;s already a\u00a0dedicated macro mode!&#8221;\u00a0 To (Insert your name here) I say &#8220;Not good enough&#8221;.\u00a0 The problem is that the camera does a couple of things you have no control over when you set it to the macro scene mode.\u00a0 One is that it zooms to the widest setting (28mm equivalent) not a focal length one thinks of right away\u00a0for macro, considering it results in nearly poking the subject with the lens.\u00a0 The other thing that happens is that the camera switches to jpeg shooting even if you were previously shooting RAW.\u00a0 For these reasons I&#8217;ve created my own and stored it under U1 on the mode dial.<\/p>\n<p>This is how I went about it.\u00a0 The first step after turning on the camera and selecting a user mode is to set an ISO or ISO range as this will be stored in memory.\u00a0\u00a0 This is followed by pressing the menu button, If U1 isn&#8217;t yet highlighted use the command dial to navigate so U1 is selected and shows the User setting parameters as in the image bellow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-4394\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0526.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4394\" title=\"_K7_0526\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0526.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0526.jpg 640w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0526-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve set my camera up for Program mode but aperture priority would also be a good choice.\u00a0 Ive also selected an equivalent focal\u00a0length setting of of<strong> 85mm<\/strong> as this provides a good working distance. Under Photo info I&#8217;ve chosen to display the <strong>histogram<\/strong> and a<strong> grid<\/strong> to aid in judging exposure and composition.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-4396\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0528.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4396\" title=\"_K7_0528\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0528.jpg 640w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0528-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve also chosen to have the flash off by default as I rarely use the built in flash for macro shots, it&#8217;s just to close to the lens and too harsh even when it&#8217;s output is dialed down.\u00a0 The next critical setting is of course focus which needs to be set to <strong>Macro close-up<\/strong>.\u00a0 The remaining settings are AF to <strong>Center normal <\/strong>and AF assist to <strong>OFF.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-full wp-image-4395\"><span><span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0527.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4395\" title=\"_K7_0527\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0527.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0527.jpg 640w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/K7_0527-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you have made all the selections you must save them.
