effect I hung a semi transparent queen sized white sheet between two stands in front of the window.\u00a0 By placing the model close to the light source it allowed light to spill in from both sides.\u00a0<span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-large wp-image-278\"><span><span><span><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-278\" title=\"backlight\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight-1024x738.jpg\" alt=\"backlight\" width=\"415\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight-1024x738.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight-300x216.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight.jpg 1210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In order to deal with the great difference in light levels I metered for the models face and allowed the backdrop\/ light source to clip.\u00a0 In addition a reflector was placed in front of the model for fill.\u00a0 The resulting exposure was F5.6 at 1\/60 sec and ISO 250.\u00a0 This was actually 1 1\/3 stops over what had been metered for the models face but helps give the high key look I was after.\u00a0 In order to get a warmer look the white balance can also be increased by about 1000 degrees, but in this case it was fine and I have left it as shot.<\/p>\n<p>With the same setup, you can get a different look by using flash to light the subject while still clipping the white background.\u00a0 Here I placed an off camera flash with an umbrella reflector right above the camera.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"frame-outer  aligncenter size-medium wp-image-280\"><span><span><span><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-280\" title=\"backlight_5\" src=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight_5-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"backlight_5\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight_5-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight_5-680x1024.jpg 680w, http:\/\/wkoopmans.ca\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/backlight_5.jpg 997w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Settings f2.8, 1\/80 s at ISO 125.\u00a0\u00a0 The flash output power was adjusted manually for the correct exposure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is an instance where I\u00a0 wanted to create an image with the background\u00a0 completely white and the subject in front\u00a0 correctly exposed.\u00a0 So I was in a situation where I was taking pictures with a large south facing window that would have light streaming in all day.\u00a0 To create the &#8220;softbox&#8221;
